The characteristics of a successful affiliate marketer are not unlike the characteristics of any other successful businessperson. However, there are a few differences that should be considered if you’re trying to determine whether or not you would make it as an affiliate marketer. Let’s take a look at those differences and some of the basic characteristics of a good businessperson in general.

If you own any type of business, you probably already possess the following qualities of a good businessperson/entrepreneur:

• Ambition (very important)
• Good organizational skills
• Good communication skills
• Desire to succeed and do what it takes
• Ability to prioritize tasks or projects
• Knowledge of the product or service being offered

There are obviously more characteristics than those listed above. However, these essential characteristics are shared by all successful businesspeople. Especially important are ambition and the desire to do what it takes to succeed.

But, because affiliate marketers work mostly on their own, there are a few more things to consider before you make your final decision to jump into working at home. Affiliate marketers usually possess these additional attributes:

• Ability to work well independently
• Ability to make decisions independently
• Excellent written communication skills (not just “good” communication skills)
• Firm grasp on the workings of the Internet (some HTML experience is a big plus!)
• General knowledge of affiliate marketing as a business — not just a “get-rich-quick” venture
• Ability to see “the big picture” — some of what you do in your affiliate marketing venture can take a while to pay off, while other things happen more quickly.

I think the most important of these attributes is the ability to work independently. When you’re sitting at your computer trying to decide what to do next, it’s easy to get distracted by emails, sales pitches of the next new way to make money, or whatever. But when the end of the day comes, you want to feel like you were productive that day, not just wonder what you did all day.

Good affiliate marketers know that making money is important, but feeling satisfied in what you do is even more important. You NEED to love what you’re doing. If you don’t, then keep looking until you find that thing that’s worth getting up in the morning to do. It may be as simple as changing the niche you’re promoting to –- but of course, that decision is up to you now.
