Making PLR Content Your Own

20119960A Private Label Rights (PLR) article is content whose copyright is obtained by the buyer to be used according to the buyer’s wishes. Many content marketers and others use PLR to provide fresh content to a target audience. PLR saves time you might otherwise use to research content topics yourself, and it saves money you might otherwise spend on outsourced writing.

The key to using PLR content is to make it your own. After all, content marketing is an ongoing display of your expertise on a particular niche. Continuously providing useful content to readers will have them returning to your site again and again — and pique their interest in the products you sell.

To that end, here are a couple of tips for making PLR content unique to you.

Change the Phrasing

You could post the PLR article as is, because you hold the copyright. But remember that others also purchased that article, and the same content may appear in numerous places on the Internet. A search engine could possibly consider your article to be duplicate content, thus pushing your web page back in search results. Besides, applying your own phrasing to the article will better position you as “the expert.”

You could change plenty of words to alternative words, such as “have,” “often,” “look,” etc. But don’t change just individual words. By changing entire phrases and sentences, you present more of your own voice in the content.

A good rule of thumb is to change at least 30 percent of the original content wording. The higher that percentage is, the better.

Retain the Meaning

As you change the phrasing, make sure the meaning of the article is not distorted. Open two copies of the original article side by side. Keep one of the copies completely original and work on the second copy. This will ensure that you retain the meaning of the original article.

An Example

Here are two versions of an article on anxiety cures. The first paragraph is original; the second reflects changes made to it in bold font.

Original:
If you have anxiety you have probably looked into a lot of anxiety cures. Many people with anxiety try everything they can think of before they reach out for professional help to cure anxiety. This is often because of the social stigma that is still prevalent in some areas of society. Many people believe, or are told by friends and relatives that if they talk to their doctor about anxiety that the doctor will “make” them take medication to cure anxiety. Nothing could be further than the truth.

With changes:
If you suffer from anxiety you will have no doubt spent time researching anxiety cures. Many people who suffer from anxiety will have tried everything they can before seeking professional help to cure their anxiety. This is frequently because some areas of modern society are still intolerant toward certain illnesses. It is widely believed that the only cures available for anxiety are drug-based. This is most definitely not the case.

As you can see, the second paragraph contains only about 20 percent of the original wording from the first paragraph, with no change in meaning. And this took only a few minutes to complete.

PLR is an easy, effective way to infuse your site with quality content. Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll get the most out of your PLR content.

  1. Great post, when you see how to use PLR the right way, the internet becomes a “real” treasure chest of content just waiting for you to use your creativity and make it your own.

  2. This is a great post. I have used PLR articles and software as give aways. This is also a great way to use PLR content. Good luck in all your business endeavors.

  3. Some great tips here. I’ll add that you don’t really need to change the content if you use it for autoresponder messages, or anything other than trying to get an SEO ranking.

The quality of the plr will determine the quality of the rewritten material as well.

  4. Actually, you can take a poorly written piece of PLR and re-write it to be excellent (since you’re the expert)! I use PLR to get ideas on what to write about, then just change a bunch of stuff. I also like brandable plr because you can add your affiliate links, instead of just sending people to the original writer’s site. One more suggestion: If you’re buying any kind of PLR eBook (with Master Resell Rights), you’ll do better giving it away if you take the time to have another cover made – and use a different title.

  5. Thank you for the great post. I am new at using PLR articles and was one to assume that once you buy it, you use it as written. As your post points out, making changes is good to avoid the duplication problem. Thanks for pointing this out. Once again, nothing is never as easy as you hoped for.
