Have 2 Hours? Start an Online Business

business handshake

You can sacrifice a couple of hours of your life to the TV gods tonight watching the Family Guy marathon, or you can unleash your inner entrepreneur.

Get out your stopwatch and do these five steps to launch your own revenue-ready online business.

Worried about committing before you are sure of your end goal? Fuggitaboudit! All these steps will help you with whatever Internet marketing path you choose. This kickoff gets you off of zero and on your way to hero.

You’re never again at zero after you’ve started. Launch your business in two hours by completing the following five steps:

1. Identify your PASSION (20 minutes)

Grab a piece of paper. Write a list of the things you love most — at least five items. Rank them, with your favorite topic as #1.

Go to Google. Individually enter the top five items in your list into a Google search, noting for each one the number of results. Now re-sort your original list, with the items with higher results moving up the list.

2. Find an affiliate PRODUCT related to your passion (20 minutes)

Sign up for ClickBank. Find products related to your TOP 3 list items starting with number one.

Find two products for each of your TOP 3; add the two prices together; re-sort your TOP 3 list, and see what the highest priced topic is.

That is your theme, and your first two products.

3. Launch a WEBSITE (59 minutes)

Register a domain name with GoDaddy: Pick something with your theme in the name. Fastest method: Enter your theme and pick one of their suggestions. Use one with a “.com” ending. Select the least expensive hosting package and none of the extras. Search for “godaddy coupons” on Google before you check out to get a discount. By registering your domain and hosting together, you minimize delays in set up.

If you don’t have an FTP software to handle files on your new hosting package, go to Download.com and get the free CoreFTP software.

Download the free WordPress blog platform by signing into GoDaddy, clicking “Hosting,” then “Manage Account,” then “Your Applications,” then “Blogs,” then “WordPress,” and finally “Install Now.”

Use an included sample template for your site. Lots of templates are available, and you can update and replace your selection at a later time.

4. Write your first POST (20 minutes)

What’s on your mind related to your theme? Write it! You may have a book in you (everyone does), but this is not the time for the book! Pick one simple point or idea to express. Write three paragraphs. If you need more, break it up and come back to it later with additional posts. This is all about completing the entire process once, so you can expand on SOMETHING that is complete.

Go to your ClickBank account. Get your coded link to one of the two products you identified, and paste it at the bottom of your post. Sample: “Also, check out X.” Hyperlink X with the affiliate-coded link you obtained via your ClickBank account.

5. SUBMIT your new website to Google (1 minute)

Submit your website to Google for free at http://www.google.com/addurl/.

It will take a while for it to show up in search results. Until then, feel free to share your work directly with friends and family. You have your own online business.

Now that you are up and running, nothing can stop you. Energized by progress, you are no doubt already thinking of more posts, more placements for your affiliate links in your blog, and more ways to get traffic to your site.

Go get ‘em!

Share your thoughts and tell us of your new site launches!

  1. Frankly I thought it was a great blog, you encapsulated throusands of dollars worth of advice in one blog. Thank you, it’s going on my wall as a map.

  2. You do make it sound simple! What a person already knows is simple. I don’t know this stuff. It is not simple to me!

  8. I enjoy reading this blog, basic stuff that took me longer to get because I did not read this before…

    Thank you,

  9. I must say that the above post gives direction to a newbie. Most of the time, a newbie just ends up buying tons of programs and gets lost in it.
Information like the above will help him to get focussed on what he needs to do.

    Cheers !

  13. Hm…I don’t know. I think you gave much much better advice!!! What’s in it: TAKE ACTION! and that someone should not overcomplicate things.
But I am pretty sure, that most people who try it like above will get no results at all. And if there is no success, no positive feedback, they will get upset and frustrated.

    my 2 cents :~]

  14. Setting up a online business is simple but not easy. How many articles must be written to get noticed? How much traffic will come your way based on the one article? Online business requires time and patience and experience. The experience of the online masters can not copied only their actions and their personal experience takes over when things do not work well. The newbies must learn and go through the process. The online-masters have a different mindset and we do not know HOW they think or see what they see. That is why mentors and mastermind groups are highly recommended. So in closing I reiterate, setting up an online business is simple but not easy because if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

  18. Great post! I like how you made it very simple that even a caveman can do it!

    Keep the information coming,

  19. Very nice post! Sometimes just getting started can boggle your mind!

  20. Really wish it was that simple. I have done that 10X over with dozens of niches only to still be a struggling affiliate. I have SEO’d every site, done link building, articles. I am also not a newbie by any means. I have a background in SEO and technology. I can build a website in 20 minutes when it takes others 1 hour. Nothing has ever stopped me from doing what I do. I don’t want to sound negative, but rather just realistic. Most people just jump in and get discouraged because it does sound easy, but when it doesn’t work they give up. All I am telling you is to realize what starting a “business” means. Consider writing a business plan and sticking to it. With so many affiliate offers and niches to go into, the best think you can do is find a hot niche and stick with it until you make it work. Jumping from niche to niche will only be the death of your “business”.

  21. Great stuff.Video would make it like taking candy from a baby….

  23. Like Hiram said, starting and running an online business is simple, but often far from easy. The information you provided in the blog post is great for anyone that is just getting started, that has no idea where to even begin. When I first got started with Internet Marketing, I learned everything the hard way…the school of hard knocks so to speak. If I had to do it all again, I would do it just like you said. Fortunately, I don’t have to do it all again, and just work diligently to help my affiliates and customers as much as I can.

  24. Thanks for sharing this. While I don’t use this business model to make money online, it is one I’ll be employing in the very near future and hopefully reporting back to tell u how it went/going. Like Mike Litman says ‘You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going’

  25. You have been of great help in focusing my thought as i try to help a friend get started in online business. I certainly have learned a lot going through your step. From now on I will pay more attention to your email and refer my friend to your blog.

  26. Thanks for sharing this basic knowledge about online business.

    Thanks
    Alam

  27. Good simple post, you know you can submit the site to press release sites which is what I do e.g. http://www.newdesignworld.com/press/

  28. Yes, affiliate marketing is really not Rocket Science. A few things done RIGHT – and over and over (like writing articles) will get you much farther than just purchasing more information and reading. Taking Action is the best advice you can TAKE!

  29. B E A utiful post. I mean how many experts will you get talking straight to the point and injecting so much useful information!
    Thanks guys

  31. Awesome information. Thank you for sharing.

  32. I have many godaddy names. You gotta pay hosting right? It looks like it’s $6.99 per month to host unless I’m missing something.

  33. Chris above has said it right. You could follow the information in this post and get no where fast. I have also built many affiliate sites, wrote posts, done SEO and nothing came. I even have sites from three years ago and nothing much came from them.

Its not that simple. This tactic simply doesnt work. A lot of SEO and marketing needs to go into this in order to make any money.

Once the site is up you need to write articles and submit them, join social media networks, pay people to do really good seo work, and pay a lot of money in online advertising and maybe then you will make money. Good luck.

  34. I doubt that you can get your website listed on Google first page just by doing this.

Backlinking is the most important part of your website. If you have not done any articles, forums, blogs marketing then you are unlikely to get your website listed.

  35. Hey all, this article has been Dugg a few times. If this article helped you, please go to http://digg.com/business_finance/Have_2_Hours_Start_an_Online_Business and Digg it yourself. Digg is a social bookmarking site – your “Digg” is a like a vote for this article. If you don’t have an account, it only takes moments.

Jim, you are right that backlinking is the most important strategy to getting and staying ranked on Google. However, this article is really about getting people to take action who have not taken action before. The first step is the hardest. But we definitely appreciate your bringing up this important point, and hope you do so again in the future.

  36. Nice post. Spending 2 hours is not bad to having an online business. But it will not only require 2 hours and you will stop from there. Spending and investing in your time in your online business is a must just like on how to start blogging, spending the time to learn and do stuff that will lead you to success.

  37. Thanks for the great blog! Sure, the steps are simple and information. Something I believe most of us here would have known already. The only difference is “putting the first step forward and taking action”!. This is what many people fail to do. Procrastination is what make many fail in Internet Marketing.

  38. Thanks..my website and online business. Welcome go to chengdu of china .

  39. Excellent idea! What a splendid use of your spare two hours – tapping your inner passion and hidden talents (everyone’s good at something) and creating something productive.

  40. Wow, thanks for great post. I’m gonna try that stuff right now and make a companion site for my Stretch Pregnancy site.

I was always wondering if you can use Go Daddy with Wordpress and now you have answered my question.

    thanks

  41. hey all, just wanted to add my appreciation and thumbs up too! Anybody who wonders if it really is this simple, I just want to encourage you to keep looking ok?? Once you see it in action you’ll believe it too! These guys really do know what they’re talking about and this blog is about as far from a ’spam blog’ as I think anything ever could be! The internet is full of opportunity, and the best thing you can do is get a plan like this one and stick to it.. Just keep learning, follow the leads you find and print this good stuff out!
Best :) and lots of gratitude to this team!! Thanks..

  42. Wow that was some post. You certainly make it look easy.

  43. Generous & helpful. Thank you.

  44. This is a practical post exposing the steps to start an income stream very simply. To make successful affiliate product sale, you have to write a good content about the product (that should make the reader to buy the product).

Also, you could easily promote your link via Adwords (+30minutes).

    -Mr.Ven

  45. Thank you so much for summarizing the simple steps.
This has forced me to examine what personality I am:
Procrastinator? Perfectionists? Take either characteristic, and one is likely to fail, hath both, the picture is grim.
The latter is what I am,
However, I’ve “gone so far, that it is just as easy as to vault it over”: so, bear with me, my site shall be launched – up and running – by November 15.
It is going to be a FREE HOW TO (e.g. among a myriad things, Manage your mortgage) newsletter site: I just want to build a LIST of loyal subscribers … oops, the same thing you are doing – maybe, we could mutually benefit each other by cross promoting. I am going to “digg.com” to promote your site next.

  46. Well Done!! You put this across so simply and yet you have captured the essentials. I will print this out and put it on the wall as a roadmap to setting my blogs up.
    Thank you.

  47. great (and really useful) post to think about online business. Every body can. This post doesn’t a business plan, it’s just a reasin to think about online business. Why not?

  49. I really liked this post. It really does often come down to giving up a few unnecessary bad habits like time-less television. I think starting an internet business is a good idea and a good tax right-off in the early years; however, I do come away from the post being some-what seasoned, and unsuccessful marketer as being somewhat over-simplified.

    Just my thoughts.
