Google’s Keyword Tool: Is Beta Better?

You may have noticed something different when you’ve gone to use Google’s keyword tool. The familiar external keyword tool has been replaced with their new beta version.

Google launched their beta version back in the fall, but started diverting traffic to it this spring. Both required you to pass a security check to use the tool (a basic character CAPTCHA) but the new version projects the CAPTCHA before you can access the page.

As a refresher, here’s what the old tool interface looked like:

And here’s what the new tool looks like:

Doesn’t seem too different, right?

Now let’s see the tools in action. Here’s what a keyword search for ‘cats’ looks like,

Old version:

New version:

Here’s where the versions differ:

  1. The beta version returns only 100 results, while the old version gives you 150, plus a list of 50 keywords to consider that don’t use your suggested word.
  2. While both tools offer keyword match types for Broad, Exact and Phrase, only the old version offers negative, which as Internet marketers know, can be just as important as Broad match.
  3. You can display all the search columns in the old version, while the new version offers to sort the results by Estimated Ad Position, Estimated Avg. CPC, or Search Trends.

Now some Google critics are grumbling about the beta version’s interface, and it’s true it’s a little less user-friendly, since it made ‘Match Type’ a sidebar element instead of a column, and the sorting element is now a drop-down box instead of just clicking on a heading.

But while you adjust to the new tool (and make sure you explore all the sidebar elements and test out sorting suggestions) you can still access the old. Even though all links lead to the beta version, in the top right-hand corner of the screen is a ‘previous interface’ hyperlink that takes you to the old version.

Google hasn’t said when they will phase out the old tool, but has confirmed that it will happen. So what do you think, is beta better?

  1. I like parts of the new interface, specifically the ability to filter the list based on different categories, but what I really miss is the ability to add keywords to a saved list of results from a previous search. I find this feature to be sadly missing.

  2. Nice comparison, though I think you made one mistake in saying that the Beta version only returns 100 results–I have been forcing the old version in my own daily routine because I didn’t care for the look of the Beta, like others, but after reading your posting I thought I’d give the Beta a little test run.

In my results I got 687 keywords, not a 100 limit at all.

It’s also worth noting that a lot of the juicy information, like estimated average CPC pricing, isn’t going to be displayed on-screen with the Beta version, but is included in the spreadsheet if you download your results, and is much more in-depth than the original tool ever gave. So, it’s a trade-off of convenience (not having the numbers display online) for more and better data being available if you take the extra step to download your results.

Sorry this is long winded, but I’m very glad your post prompted me to try the Beta again because for those of us who spend money with AdWords and/or anyone who uses CPC estimates for making purchasing and marketing decisions the Beta actually delivers a wealth of information to mine through over the original tool.

  3. Well, its seems like we may be losing some of the keywords, so I cannot say that I think beta is better, however it is still in beta so they may make some changes.

  4. I like the old version more. Maybe because I’m use to it and I quicly found what I want with it. What I like to new one is the trends buttons. Even so seems more complex and slower.

  5. The new interface isn’t all that bad. It took a little bit to get used to. However, I still prefer the old. I like more results.

  6. Thanks for the tour, I’m new to the system and appreciate all the info I get. I think I’ll start using the new interface more now since the old will be gone soon.

  7. I’m overwhelmed!. When I began to understand the old version I get a new one to learn!

  8. I think the new tool sucks… And oddly I can’t get the “previous interface” link to appear right now, but for some reason I could with another browser
