Select the Best Content Management System for Your New Website

Part 2 of the Perfect Foundation Series

Once you’ve bought a domain and hosting, you want to put some content on that domain instantly. Getting content onto your domain will get your foot in the door so you can build the site out into the distant future.

What Are Content Management Systems?

Put your site up online within minutes and be able to scale it out by using content management systems.

A content management system (CMS) is a program that you install on your domain to provide you with an online admin area where you can write and publish content to your websites.

Top Three CMSs: Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress

The three CMSs that stand out among the multitude available to you are Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress.

These three CMSs are open source, which means they’re free. And they’re popular, which means you will have strong communities to support you and provide you with tons of cool features. They all will give you the ability to publish to your domain instantly and build it out into a great-looking site that you can profit from.

The main strengths of each are the following: To make and publish a blog site as quickly as possible, go with WordPress. To make and publish a professional site as quickly as possible, go with Joomla. For long-term professional or community sites, go with Drupal.

Here’s a chart comparing their relative popularity based on the number of searches for them on Google:

Trends_-_Drupal,_Joomla,_Wordpress

Because these are open source platforms, you can download tons of add-ons created by programmers around the world for free. These add-ons make these platforms able to do almost anything you want, instantly and with minimal technical knowledge from you.

After you’ve installed one CMS, start inputting plug-ins for it. For Drupal go to http://drupalmodules.com/. For Joomla, go to http://extensions.joomla.org/. For WordPress go to the “Plugins” tab within your site’s WordPress admin area.

Plug-ins and Open Source

Even though plug-ins give you great control over making your site great, plug-ins are the most vulnerable part of your website. Read about the plug-ins you plan to use to make sure your site will be safe.

Overall, however, open source systems are in certain regards much more safe than commercial systems because everyone who uses the software can make it safer by sending corrections or “patches” to the CMS organization. The Obama administration website “whitehouse.gov” recently switched to Drupal citing safety as a key reason they made the switch to the open source CMS.

Installing Your CMS

You will have a GoDaddy domain and hosting account if you followed the recommendations of the first article in this series “Perfect Foundation.” You can install all of these CMSs within your GoDaddy account with no complicated decisions.

Download the free WordPress blog platform by signing into GoDaddy, clicking “Hosting,” then “Manage Account,” then “Your Applications,” then “Blogs,” then “WordPress,” and finally “Install Now.” Follow the same general steps to install Drupal and Joomla from within your GoDaddy account.

If you cannot use your hosting account to auto-install these CMS platforms, then follow these steps:

  1. Go to joomla.org, wordpress.org, or drupal.org
  2. Download the version you want of the CMS software
  3. Unzip the file, read the instructions
  4. Upload to your site via FTP — which was described in the first article in this series — and start the installation.

  1. Excellent information. I’m just considering re-building my website which was built 9 years ago. I knew I wanted to go CMS. Your article help me in my decision for this site and for some future projects I’m working on. Thank you!

  2. Great article! I know both Joomla and WordPress, but my preference is WordPress. I’ve built many websites in WordPress and find it easy to use and highly functional.

I would highly recommend WordPress as the CMS of choice for new affiliate marketers who want to build a quality website in a short period of time.

  3. Years and years ago I started out on Drupal. It was powerful, with tons of features, but often cumbersome to use. I picked up Wordpress about 5 years ago and it’s been heaven ever since! It’s grown exponentially over the years, and can now do any and everything you would want it to!

I had originally built a few sites on Joomla and Mambo, but recently converted them over to Wordpress (including an e-commerce site). Wordpress is just so powerful!

  4. Great news! This is timely information for me. I have just been reviewing “the best” options for putting up sites fast as I am starting a new series of sites. I have only used WordPress so far but will look more closely at joomla and drupal. I appreciate the info!

  5. I was checking on CMS the other day. Could not make up my mind. I think Wordpress is the way forward for me and my needs.

    Thanks

    A

  6. I use both Wordpress and Joomla. It’s certainly true that Wordpress is a lot easier to get used to. You can almost use it straight out of the box and search engines seem to like it but for more control I prefer joomla although there is a learning curve. Never really looked at Drupal but gather it is very professional

  7. thanks for the great info.i have just published my first blog site with wordpress and am working my way around the plugins.great stuff!

  8. I like WP because most hosts will install it for you with a few clicks of a button. Do the other ones have auto-installers?

  14. the ONLY WAY to do this is with wordpress….there is nothing joomla can do that word press can’t….with the right use of plugs ins and technical skills.

the big difference…once you get the infrastructure right.l..it is so easy to add/change the content.

you can create templates that works like joomla for certain types of content….

we just created a 300 page site….all using wordpress…and are getting google organic rankings for some of our key words…it works

if you look at the number of plugs ins…wordpress rocks!!!!!!!!!

  15. Hi!
Your information is great. I am using Wordpress, but I wasn`t know it is a CMS. I was thinking it is a blog with a better performance, shame on me =)). I has Joomla too, but I was removed because the Wordpress I like it more and I am managing much easily . Wordpres have updates more frequently.(I was learn in the classroom we have no obligation to make a perfect product from the fist time we can update, repair in time, Wordpress is using the same methods)
I see the people here are agreeing better Wordpres, than other CMS`s. I agree with them.
I wish you all the best and forgive me, if my English is so perfect, I hope you can understand, my English “version” :)

  17. Ive been struggling with Joomla for a long time, like many people I just did not see WordPress as a CMS?

I love wordpress and with the new updated version, it is absolutely amazing. I love it and Im in the process of transitioning my site over from Joomla to WP.

Great info! Thanks for the insight.

  18. This could not have come at a more perfect time. I have been struggling with scaling the build out of content on my sites. It’s time for me to ditch these old static pages and move to wordpress.

  19. Wordpress is always good i believe because it has the flexibility to easily customize everything as per our needs. And of course, free plugins makes life too easier.

    Thank you

  24. I love working with WordPress and while it may not have the professional image of the other CMS systems, I feel it has a more personal look to it over all.

I’ve noticed that one of the biggest mistakes folks make with WordPress is in their choice of hosting provider.

Having worked with hosting of both types, friendly and unfriendly hosting providers, I will never again knowingly sign up for hosting with a provider that is not WordPress friendly, even if my immediate plans do not include using WordPress, as I would not want to limit my options for future planning.

  25. thanks for the great info.i have just published my first blog site with wordpress and am working my way around the plugins.great stuff!
