Lurn has profited with Twitter because of these simple practices … and you can too!
Here are the best practices for building out a long-term, high-payout Twitter account.
Our in-house Twitter expert, David, spills the beans about the most important tactics for affiliate marketers. We sat down yesterday, and I made him tell me right then and there what the keys to our Twitter success are.
Check them out below:
1. How many tweets? The biggest question we hear is "how many times should I tweet each day?" Here’s the answer: post two tweets a day.
2. Mix it up. One of those two tweets should be a helpful link for your particular audience, as opposed to a sales link. You want to provide real value to your followers, not just ads.
3. Space it out. Have a few hours between your tweet posts. Do one in the morning and one at night. If you have trouble setting aside time twice a day, try using a tool such as SocialOomph (you will have to register for a free account) to schedule your tweets and have them sent when you’re asleep or doing something else.
4. Make it pretty. Use a link-shortening tool to help hide the fact that it’s an affiliate link. In Affiliate Classroom, we provide a tool that not only shortens your links, but also tracks the clicks to your links.
5. Link to your own blog. Have some of your helpful links point to your blog posts. Post blog entries that are helpful to people or give them value in other ways. Getting your Twitter followers onto your site deepens the relationship you have with them and builds your readership.
6. Be fun. Link to funny stuff in some of your tweets. People love a laugh, and you want your readers to consider you a real person, not an information machine. You may want to stick to your niche (if you have built a niche following) so that you can have “inside” jokes that are more likely to get laughs from your readers.
7. Be a hot source of ideas. Take note of interesting sites you come across. In a typical day, you probably find many more compelling or helpful sites and tools than you expect, and if you have a targeted following, you can help them out by sharing.
8. Research it. To find valuable links, simply research topics that are of interest to you or your followers.
9. Be a “watcher” and re-tweet (RT). Follow the best Twitter accounts in your niche. How to get started: There are sites that provide a list of popular people who you should follow. You can also use Twitter Search to find the most frequent and popular tweeters on your niche. When they tweet something interesting, re-tweet it to share it with your followers.
10. Stir it up. Ask open-ended questions to draw out responses from your followers. This will result in other users replying to you, and in doing so, they are using your Twitter ID in their responses. That means that your ID appears on their feed, and all of their followers can click to learn about you and begin following you. This approach is key to "snowball" growth of your followers.
11. And shake it up. Ask controversial questions in your tweets. Ask people to give their opinion on an issue. In this way, you are interacting with others. Your followers will like to see that you are not just putting on a sales front but are engaging and there to help. They’ll also be more likely to recommend you to their followers — again, growing your base of followers.

Nice tips David!
I’ve always wondered what’s the best way to tweet! How many times, what to tweet, how personal I should be etc. Thanks for letting us know about the AC link tracking tool!

“Free Video Reveals the #1 Secret to Getting a $10,000, $100,000, Even a $1.6 Million Grant.”
Now that was very helpful to me. I was really confused in trying to figure the whole “twitter” thing out. This gives me a blueprint to follow.

Thanks! I assume you have tested all of this, so it really increases the speed with which someone can get a twitter following up and running…Sean
Those are some great tips that can be accomplished easily, and are very effective.
In linking your blog, do you know that you can link your blog posts to your Twitter account? It’s super easy using the Tweetable Plug-in, plus you can soup it up a bit using Tweetmeme and multiple Twitter accounts.
Maybe I’ll write an article/lens on that…
Thank you so much for the info –sharing

Thank you for this. As a newby blogger, twitterer, etc., I have been wanting a clear, concise explanation so as how to best use Twitter (by the way, they are very fussy…be careful opening up more than several accounts, and don’t do that all in one day, either, or rather, really read their rules.) You filled the bill. Much appreciated.
Thanks you for this.
I was doing the wrong thing now I can do a better twitter!
But you didn’t say about how to make money with twitter?
You think we can’t make money with twitter!
I should you post a video and show us how to automate the twitter and not just
an article with 11 points…
Now people watching more video than ever!
What next?
Great information guys! We have been using Twitter for our practice for a couple of months now and we love it. We will be implementing some of your ideas immediately. Thanks again!
Great tips Lurn!
I just tweeted this link to the article because I am actively using Twitter to build relationships and I am seeing so many people doing Twitter wrong. I guess the auto software entices these marketers into thinking they can just spam hundreds of sales pitches on Twitter and think they are going to make money.
I put a call to action to RT (RE Tweet for newbies) these important tips to try and help people that just may not know any better.
Thanks again!
Greg
Hey David, great comments! I am curious about the number of times you feel it’s best to tweet. I’m more active on my two accounts (probably because I’ve got a big mouth, who knows) and the snowball effect has been great. Can you please tell us the logic behind the two tweets per day?
Thanks, Julie
I’m still old school (Myspace and Blogs) and have been thinking about “How” to use Twitter – thanks for the tips. Now, I am trying to figure out fundamentally “Why” as in for what purpose should I use Twitter for my business (Other than the Social aspect of being at a party). It would be great if you could provide “Hottest Insider Tips for Twitter Success” on the subject of “How to Build Your Business using Twitter” in your next post.
Hey David,
Tank you very much for the tips for twitter success.
Lea
Nothing new. The same old stuff rehashed hundreds of time. If you follow these tips, do you think that magically followers will line up to follow you? Good luck on that. Are these lame tips precursors to some high priced twitter magic formula course that is coming soon? Good luck to suckers who believe in these crap.
Great info, David! I started to tweet for business, but now I like it because helps to build relationships. Your tips very helpful and I’ll implement them. Thanks guys for sharing!
Hey David,
I have to agree with everyone and THANK YOU for the Super Good tips. Lots of us don’t know some of these inside tips. This should help our businesses so many thanks again.
God Bless
You can also use:
tweetlater awesome, awesome twitter management tool webbased
Tweetdeck – awesome air-based desktop tool. supports multiple accounts. Competes with seesmic.
As far as tweets go, I’d go for more than 2 tweets a day.
I mix it up. I’ll do:
1-2 questions
1 polls
1-2RT’s
1-2 quotes brainyquote.com is a place for copying quotes
1-2 links on my niche topic. You can check out googles blogsearch for content on yoru niche
Use a shortner, I prefer bit.ly and I pay something like $4/month for premium stats. Its well worth it for the statistical insights you get.
Automate your following. Following and unfollowing is a pain after a while.
I have several accounts on autopilot. 3 of them will probably go 10K in the next few weeks. These are all on autopilot. I’ve barely touched them. My main site is also pretty automated but I chime in once in a while.
Hope this is helpful
To profitable tweeting,
Carlos
This is great info. I think that #1 should be “post a minimum of two tweets a day”. You can use SocialOomph to schedule your tweets so why not go for more.
These are some great tips, especially #11 “Ask controversial questions in your tweets”. Keep the tips coming.
Very awesome article and I was searching for this kind of question and I got the answer, thanks….
You forgot to mention and retweets about great Affiliate Classroom events and programs!
Nice tips. Particularly loved the one about tweeting twice a day. My twitter account is currently blasting a tweet on the hour….oops. Will do some tweaking tonight.
Great stuff David
Good tips Dave, however may I add a couple of things, firstly be focused. focus on a target audience, don’t go for a scatergun approach.
However if you have, then rather than pick an affiliate market, go for something like sponsored tweets (see http://bit.ly/2GquSC ) where you get paid by the followers rather than sales.
Dave – thanks for these tips. After all the hype – this is the first set of concrete steps I have seen.
thanks for the great information im new to this,
and every bit of great info i can get like youve
given here makes it alot more easier for the newbies.
thanks
mick
Thanks David,
These are interesting Twitter questions and really great answers.
I hope you don’t mind but I will be sharing this with my email subscribers and also on my blog. And I will be Tweeting about it today.

Great tips — like many people am still working on figuring out all of the web 2.0 stuff. Looking forward to the next tips.
Thanks for the info, David..it will surely cut down on errors that I make as well
as “mix it up” and “shake it up” as you put it..
Thanks for these great tips. It has helped me gain a better perspective of how I have been using Twitter. I can see that I need to make some adjustments.

Great tips. I just tried #11 to see what happens …
thx for the tips.i’m trying all of them now
Thanks for the information. I’ve been tweeting for a while but there’s lots I still need to know about twitter. Your article was very helpful.
Great information! Thanks for all the tips.
Thanks David:
Superb start for me. I am in the stone age. Just started blogging 2 weeks ago. Still finding my voice. Big vistas opening up! Within a year I expect to be an expert making a fair contribution in this great sea.
Thanks for the tips! I love systems and you have broken everything down here into simple steps. More meat here than in most of the expensive twitter packages currently on sale.
Quick tip – Keep your twitter account fairly tightly focused on a specific subject. That way you know your tweets will be of interest to all your followers and easier to research for new material to tweet. Want to cover more areas, have more twitter accounts. Bit like seo, target one keyword phrase per page not many.
Another quick tip for you – your links in these comments should have the target attribute set to “_blank” so that they open in a new window, that way you don’t lose any visitors clicking on them, they stay in your site.
Keep up the great content and thanks again!
Martin

Hi David,
Thank you very much for your ideas. After read your post I think I will create an account with twitter because maybe it worth the effort. I think it is a question of mentality to write twice a day, because at the long time it could be stressful.
