Get Our 11 Hottest Insider Tips for Twitter Success, Volume II

21948218
Our Twitter expert David received a deluge of questions after posting his first Twitter tip sheet last week. So here are a few more of his key Twitter practices.

Remember, David uses these same practices for Lurn’s Twitter. These are best practices for building long-term high-payout Twitter accounts.

Read them below:

1. Avoid automation. People instantly unfollow people who write like bots. Demonstrate that you’re human by writing each of your tweets. It’s one thing if you write them and schedule them to go out later, but don’t publish automatic prescripted tweets.

2. Be personal. Personal tweets let people see who you are. If your tweets are just about your niche, then followers may think you’re just a robot. Lesson: Post occasional tweets that aren’t strictly about your niche.

3. Be a copywriter. To write effective tweets, learn about and use fundamental copywriting techniques. Write tweets so effective that even you would want to click on them.

4. Adopt it. Tweeting is a new form of writing, so make your own conclusions as to the fastest way to improve. But one great way to develop your own writing style is by adopting great techniques you see in others’ posts.

5. Be familiar. After you’ve mastered how to get people to click on your links, standardize your writing style so that your followers become familiar with your voice. When followers know what to expect, reading your tweets can become part of their daily routine.

6. Big message in small ways. If there’s a big event going on – a big launch maybe – the best way to promote it is to direct your followers to your blog. On your blog, you can update as much as you like. Twitter is not the place to publish updates every half hour.

7. Branch out. Use Twitter as a tool in your marketing toolbox, not as a complete business model.

8. Slide in. Twitter is great for opening up dialogue with big names in your niche, even JV (Joint Venture) partners. JV partners are effective marketers who can help launch your products. Ease your way into relationships with them by answering questions they ask in Twitter. In responding to them by tweet, you are helping them gain popularity.

9. Build better business partners. When you follow people you become familiar with their views and interests. Reading people’s tweets will help prepare you for meeting people face-to-face. You will discover common ground for discussion and relationship building.

10. Appreciate Twitter culture. Follow Friday is an example of how to use Twitter quirks to strengthen your relationship with your followers. Follow Friday is when members recommend other Twitterers to follow. Try recommending four or five people who you feel others will get value from following. Participating in Follow Friday is a great way to fit into the Twitter community.

11. Email it, blog it. Include your Twitter URL in the signature of your emails and blog posts.

  4. Many thanks for this excellent advice…

People are getting tired of being spammed via tweets that come in on a regular basis all day, everyday from many different sources.

When will tweeters realise that they are actually putting people off their biz opportunity using this method?

Does more to detract than attract!

    Cheers

  5. Great tips! Thanks!

    I especially like #9…very helpful.

We do a lot of this work on behalf of clients (as Twitter copywriters). Posting @replies, RTs, FF mentions, etc.. each day.

I agree that it is absolutely critical to have a human voice. I would also like to point out that it is important to be as targeted as possible with your follower build. Sure you can use a bot to grow your followers quickly, but if the followers are not real humans willing to pay for your services, then the work is worthless.

    Lots of great info here…thanks.

  13. Hi David,

Those are some great tweets. I would be interests to hear what you think is a good average ratio of personal tweets, tweets with no links to commercial tweets type thing.

I notice I take a greater interest in people that only tweet commercial messages about 20 – 25% of the time.

It’s a bit like Mike Filsaime, I love his content and the products he does but he really hammers out the commercial messages in the email. Which is a bit annoying, I would love to know if he’s tested increased content messages in his email campaigns and found out income actually drops.

Thanks again for some great information. Shout out to Anik to that was fantastic how you pimped your staff’s blogs that gave me and my friends a really good impression of the kind of person you are, if you do that for your staff, you must be a genuine nice person even though it had promotional value for you, it definitely seemed sincere.

    Kind Regards

  31. If we thinking twitter is microbloging why we need to be good copywriter we can writing like we feel…

    Right!

  32. Hi David

Great tips – thanks very much for blogging about them.

I like No 10 – appreciate the Twitter culture (e.g. Follow Friday). It’s something I’ve always seen appear in the Twitstream but I’ve never done it before, so as of now I’m going to start with the people I’ve interacted with in the past week, and who I’d recommend others to follow.

I totally agree with your point about automation too. I took a trial of TweetLater (now SocialOomph) a while back and set up automated tweets which promoted affiliate products. Each tweet was a slight variation on the one before, and I ended up with a tweet appearing almost every 10 minutes all day for 7 days.

If I was one of my followers I’d have hit the “Unfollow” button!

You’re absolutely right, if you’re going to use an automation facility like this, then at least type the tweets yourself and schedule them so you don’t actually have to be sitting in front of Twitter at the time they go out.

So now I’m back to just me tweeting manually about my blog posts / motivational quotes / free offers that I find which will be of value to anyone following.

Thanks again for your post – excellent stuff, and if you have any more, don’t be shy ;-)

    Regards

  38. Like most new to twitter, I fell for the hype that I needed to auto-mate my tweets to gain followers. What I should have been doing is save my money and write my own tweets and gain readers of my tweets. Now, I’ll need to go and cut down the number of people that just pack your account with tasteless marketing tweets. I always felt there was a better way, and lost interest in automatic tweets. Save your money and just follow the 11 tips. Thanks for the good advice.

  39. Great tips, especially about not automating your tweets. Everyone is trying to find the easy way to doing something, but somethings should stay personal and done by hand.

    Thanks
