Amit Singhal, Google Fellow, and Matt Cutts, Principal Engineer, Google Search Quality Team, writing on the official Google blog, said, “We’re including a new signal in our search ranking algorithms: site speed. Site speed reflects how quickly a website responds to web requests.”
Site speed has always had an impact on site popularity, of course. Internet users like – no, LOVE speed. Sites that load quickly and respond quickly simply do better on the Internet in general. But now Google has made site speed a part of the algorithm that determines the order in which sites are listed in search results.
The question that immediately comes to mind is:
How can I find out how “fast” my site responds to web requests?
Actually there are several free tools you can use to evaluate the speed of your site:
1. Page Speed : Page Speed is an open-source Firefox/Firebug add-on. You can evaluate your page speed and get suggestions on how to improve it.
2. YSlo: YSlo analyzes and offers suggestions for improving your page’s performance. It summarizes the page’s components.
3. WebPageTest: WebPageTest provides a waterfall view of your page load performance and then gives you a checklist to help you optimize your page load speed.
It’s hard to say how sites will be affected because of Google officially including site speed in the algorithm. According to Amit Singhal and Matt Cutts, the change has actually been in place for “several weeks” and has had little impact up to this point.
Still, better safe than sorry. Testing your site speed with the free tools listed above and then optimizing your page’s speed seems like the prudent thing to do.

Affiliate Classroom recently pointed out the fact that site speed is going to be important in search engine rankings. This is something that we welcome because of numerous reasons. One of the best ways to build a very good site that is informative and is useful for your visitors is to make pages quick and keeping them filled with high quality information. The truth is that any visitor out there loves to see that a site is loading fast. A lot of webmasters are making the huge mistake of not paying attention to this factor. This immediately brings in a loss of profit as many visitors are simply going to close the Internet browser window before they even think about whether or not to buy what you are selling. We hope that maybe now people will understand that it is not that great of an idea to build huge pages with thousands of words on them, images and different other elements that make loading time too high.
