The Kiss of Death: Not Knowing What Business You Are In
Posted by AC Editorial Team in Affiliate Marketing Monday, 29 June 2009 10:44 5 Comments
Believe it or not, most people fail at online marketing because they don’t know what they want.
They aren’t sure if they want to create their own products, or sell other people’s products … or do both.
They think they want a mailing list, but they don’t want to write an ezine every week. They buy every how-to product, and every automation software that comes out … but nothing they do seems to pay off.
Their problem is simple — they don’t know what business they’re in! It’s not enough to want to make money online. You must know what you do and don’t want to do to earn that money.
Then you have to test that model, decide if it suits you both financially and temperamentally, and stick with it so it has a fighting chance of paying off.

This is mostly for new AdSense publishers. But all affiliates should think seriously about the role content plays on their sites — and the type of visitors that their content attracts.
First, let’s look at the traditional view of content in affiliate marketing — the view many gurus still promote. In their world, content should be free. By offering free content on your site, you’ll get targeted traffic. The basic logic is, if you provide good free content, people will find it, read it, and buy the products you’re “preselling.”
But contextual advertising has turned this traditional model upside down. Today, thousands of visitors who are looking for free content can be a LIABILITY.
Think about it. If people come to your site, read your articles, and get all their questions answered, they don’t have a reason to stay and click ads. Instead, they’ll happily leave your site with the free information you just handed them on a platter.
The result is, your AdSense impressions will rise, but your CTR (click-through rate) will sink. The result? Not only will your AdSense revenues drop, but advertisers will have NO incentive to run ads on the “content network.”

One especially important thing to do in this economy is to concentrate your affiliate marketing efforts where they will bring in the most profits. You can’t afford to leave any stone unturned where your revenue stream is concerned. That’s why you’ll want to read the June issue of Affiliate Classroom magazine. We’re providing you with a number of methods to expand your affiliate business. Here’s what you’ll learn this month:
“Using Social Networking to Expand Your Affiliate Businsss.” In this first article, David Long discusses the rules and possible pitfalls for working with social networks and its members. Social networks bring people together in a huge cyber meeting place that can help you expand your affiliate business. That’s why now is the time to seriously consider marketing via social networks such as Facebook or Twitter and join the ever-growing number of paying customers who participate in these networks.
Then, “Building and Monetizing an Authority Website,” by Kathy Jackson, covers all the steps you need to know to build out the perfect authority website — from selecting your niche and researching your customer base, to monetizing the information you provide for that site. Even though an authority website is a little harder to build than the average marketing website, the expansion of your business will be worth the effort. Get started with this step-by-step guide.
I’m sure you’ve heard before that in order to make BIG money in Internet marketing, it’s a good idea to have your own product. That’s why you’ll want to be sure to read “Creating Your Own Products,” by Mark Thompson. Product creation can be a very profitable venture and can quickly lead to promotional opportunities. This article examines the creation of a product from its conception and creation to its promotion, and sales and delivery. Master each of these four stages and your product will succeed; trip up on any one stage, and the best product could turn into a flop.
Lastly, “Making the Leap from the Computer Screen,” by Katalin Torok, explains why you shouldn’t underestimate the potential of offline marketing. In this article, you’ll learn about some of the available options you could pursue, from turning electronic content into printed material, to running a drop shipping business.
We’re all looking for a good bargain in this economy, and as usual, this month’s issue of Affiliate Classroom magazine is FREE!
