Affiliate Product Selection How-To

You know what your niche is: It’s a subject that you are interested enough in that you will want to keep it front and center in your mind day after day otherwise you wouldn’t have chosen it.

Most of the time for new affiliate marketers choosing a niche isn’t near as hard as choosing the products they will promote in that niche.

There are two principles that new affiliate marketers need to apply when choosing products that they will feel comfortable promoting.

The first principle is just plain old common sense.

Of course, common sense might not be all that plain or even all that common. If the new affiliate marketer is really interested in the topic of his or her niche, he or she will know what products or services would appeal to themselves.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that if the product appeals to YOU, it will also appeal to others.

The second principle is a tad more difficult but just as essential.

The second principle is research.

You must never take shortcuts on doing your research. New affiliate marketers are sometimes tempted to forego the research but more experienced affiliate marketers will tell you that it’s a very big (and often very costly) mistake to make.

Research is one of the keys of success in affiliate marketing. You need to just DO IT! Here are a few excellent ways to determine what your niche market is doing:

  1. Visit blogs and forums to determine the demand for the product that you are considering. Find out what others are saying about the product as well as about the merchant.
  2. Use blogs and forums to determine the affluence of your customer base. (If they can’t afford it, they aren’t going to buy it.)
  3. Do the necessary keyword research.
  4. Talk to other affiliate marketers who are in niches that are closely related to your niche. Ask for advice.
  5. If you have a mentor, run your ideas by him or her.

Remember that it costs just as much to promote a lousy product as it does to promote a great product. Choose wisely!

With a Name like Squidoo, it HAS to be Good!

Squidoo is a social network - like many social networks but with a twist.

Most social networks frown upon blatant advertisements and even prohibit them entirely but not Squidoo. Squidoo welcomes affiliate marketers and their advertisements with open arms and even goes out of their way to provide tools to make marketing easier and more effective.

According to the Squidoo website:

“Squidoo is a free social network that lets you showcase your expertise in any area.  As an affiliate marketer, you have unlimited opportunities to capture the attention of multiple niches.”

Squidoo rolls out the welcome mat for us affiliate marketers in many ways. They have provided a lot of tools to help us. Here are a few of my favorites:

Write Module:  One tool that Squidoo provides is the ‘write module’. You can place direct links or hyperlinked texts anywhere by using the write module and HTML code. You can openly promote a product without having to disguise what you write as anything other than what it is…advertisement.

Poll Module:  I really love the ‘poll module’ that Squidoo makes available for FREE. You and I both know that people LOVE polls. They’ll  answer questions on a poll when they won’t do anything else. Add a poll with the right questions, and you have a very inexpensive way to do a survey;  it can give you a lot of very valuable affiliate marketing information.

Money Module:  The ‘money module’ is another very cool feature that Squidoo has come up with. There are modules for places like eBay and Wine.com where you can choose to share affiliate earnings with other marketers. It’s like a lot of little guys ganging up on the big guys. You don’t have to use the money module; you could use the write module instead and just put your affiliate ads in the code.

I don’t mean to sound like an advertisement for Squidoo here. I am just so impressed with the site. If you haven’t looked at it yet, you should. They really love affiliate marketers and it is nice to feel the love for a change.

Oh, and, if you’re a member of the Affiliate Classroom, you’ll find easy instructions on setting up your own Squidoo site  in the Case Study titled “Squidoo, It’s Easy and Fun To Do!”

Affiliate Marketing with Ebooks

One of the better ways to promote your affiliate products is to promote an ebook that contains links to those affiliate products.

It isn’t all that hard to see why. People really don’t like blatant advertising but they really do like information.

Ebooks represent information. The public has come to rely upon ebooks as a prime source of information about subjects in which they are interested.

Now, giving away an ebook that contains information about your subject as well as links to your affiliate products is a fine idea when you are using it to build your list. However, people don’t regard FREE information as having an equal value to information that they purchase.

Sometimes it is better to SELL information than it is to give it away.

That isn’t to say that promoting an ebook that contains links to your affiliate products or services is one bit easier than promoting affiliate products through PPC direct links or PPC landing pages, or even through content websites, but sometimes it can be more effective.

The best way to promote an ebook (for the purpose of promoting your affiliate products) is to give away a little of what is in the book in the form of articles that you submit to article banks.

Never give away the heart and soul of the ebook but you can give away just enough to make people want to read the rest of the ebook (and thus be exposed to your affiliate links).

Of course, you can also promote the ebook through PPC advertising and on your content website, as well.

It’s a good idea to test this and see if it works for your eBook.  You might just find a great deal of affiliate marketing success by promoting information rather than promoting the products and/or services that you hope to sell.

Beefing Up Affiliate Sales

At first I thought the term, ‘beefing up’ was maybe just a Texas term, but come to find out it isn’t. According to Answers.com: “beefed-up ( ) adj. Informal. Having been made greater or stronger.”

Now, none of the dictionaries that I consulted could define ‘beefing up.’ But the Answers.com definition is close enough! That is precisely what beefing up is. The term means getting stronger, bigger and better. Isn’t that the idea of an affiliate marketing businesses?

There are several ways that you can beef up your affiliate marketing sales. One of those ways is to promote yourself as an expert on the topic that your products or services relate to by writing articles, ebooks and reports on the topic, and submitting them to article banks and ebook repositories.

Each time an article, report or ebook is reproduced, as the author you gain credibility and establish yourself as an expert.

Another way that you can beef up your affiliate marketing sales is get out there, join and participate in blogs, forums and chat rooms that are about the topic that your products and services are related to.

Blatant advertising won’t be permitted but with your sig tag, you can still promote yourself and your products and services to the people who are most likely to buy them.

Creating your own free ezine or newsletter is another way that you can beef up affiliate marketing sales. People LIKE “free!”

Your ezine or newsletter doesn’t have to be fancy or 50 pages long. It just has to be helpful to those who care about the topic of your website.

You can use your free ezine or newsletter to build your opt-in list and thereby do some serious beefing up of your sales.
