eMarketer Predicts Podcasting Growth

What a difference a year makes!
Podcasting grew out of close to nothing two years ago and exploded in 2005. eMarketer estimates listeners may reach 10 million this year, on its way to 50 million in 2010.
Though future forecasts often prove exaggerated in retrospect, this one may well come true. The ordinary radio audience is huge in the U.S. and elsewhere. The technology for listening is very modest cost and easily portable.
With the growth of iPods, laptops, Internet-enabled mobile phones, and other devices the same is happening for the online version of radio broadcasts.
The added advantage in this case is that, unlike radio, the broadcaster side of the equation is also dirt cheap. Quality varies, but - as with the early days of community programming on cable TV - that will certainly change.
As the content improves the audience will expand in proportion. And as the more Internet addicted 18-29 year old demographic (and those behind them) ages the effect will get amplified.
Now that advertising technology has been introduced into podcasting — which that same age group has little resistance to on the web — the time is ripe for affiliate marketers to make a foray into this new source of revenue.
